Daniel, at work at Orion's Mukilteo location.

In today's work environment, employers are looking for someone who possesses the right set of skills to be successful. Dedicated, hard-working, reliable, great attitude, and eager to learn new things are just some of the attributes that describe Daniel.

Daniel has been with Orion since 2010. He began in the recycling center and then moved to light assembly where he is today. In his current position, Daniel cleans TV remotes for Comcast and packages parts for Orion's aerospace customers.

In order to further his career, Daniel is seeking employment in the field of packaging and assembly. Daniel is looking to utilize his many years of experience at Orion to obtain a position with an organization that is supportive and has plenty of room for personal and professional growth.

Meet a Mentor - Christopher McCroskey

Christopher McCroskey (right) working with Virginia (left), a participant in the Manufacturing Training Program.

Orion offers paid training in our Manufacturing Training Program. These programs allow those who have barriers to employment to learn both the technical skills and soft skills needed to be competitive in the job market. Orion's mentors bring unique value to the training programs that are offered. Mentors work one-on-one with program participants and have the ability to customize the training program to fit the needs of each individual. This allows program participants to address their weaknesses while reinforcing their strengths.

Chris McCroskey is a mentor in Orion's Mechanical Assembly area. He enjoys the work he does and the mentoring he provides. Chris related, "With patience bad days turn into good days, and they all add up; in the end the participant gains the experience and skills they need to earn and hold a job."

Each mentor receives training to prepare for their role. Mentors learn through role playing different scenarios and are given feedback to help them grow in their role as a mentor. The mentors learn to support each other, and learn how to interact with Orion's other resources, such as the vocational counselors and instructors, to make sure participants get the help they need.

Chris revealed, "One of the challenges that mentors face is coming up with different methods to teach or explain something. Each person learns differently. I have found that a combination of visual examples and practice work well."

As mentors gain experience they develop strategies for helping individuals learn needed technical skills while also building social skills. Chris explained, "By promoting teamwork it can help reduce social anxiety, while also providing a method of breaking a process into smaller steps. The steps are easier to remember, and each person gains an understanding of how they fit into the overall process."

"We are here to help the program participants," Chris disclosed. "I've learned I'm a good teacher, and I'm part of a process. It's gratifying when one of your participants completes the training and is placed into a new job with an employer. It makes you feel good to see them find success. I'm proud to be a mentor!"
