Derwin, Orion graduate.

Derwin

After taking care of a variety of personal needs that created obstacles to employment, the Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation recommended that Derwin try Orion's paid training program, as part of his treatment plan. Derwin had some machining experience through his high school shop classes, so he thought Orion's manufacturing training program would be a good fit.

Derwin started the training program in Clamp Block, and while he was striving to do his best, he really wasn't sure how well he was doing. After a few weeks, Derwin's mentor told him he was he was doing a good job, and with that little bit of positive reinforcement, Derwin was able to build his confidence. Derwin said, "The feedback I received from my mentor let me know that I was performing and doing well. After that, I really started to feel like I could handle myself with any task."

In addition to Clamp Block, Orion's training program provided Derwin with experience in CNC, Mills, Hydraulic Build Unit (HBU), Saws, and Conventional Machining. With each new area, Derwin focused on learning all that he could, and was surprised to find that he could learn new things. Derwin explained, "Orion gave me the confidence in myself that allowed me to work with others, and to learn new things. I discovered that it is never too late to learn something new."

Derwin's progress did not go unnoticed. He was nominated for Orion's worker of the month award, and while he didn't win, he was inspired by the nomination, and was motivated to do his best. The following month, Derwin's redoubled effort resulted in him winning the August 2017 worker of the month award.

After completing the training program Derwin took a position with Provail in Kent, in November of 2017. Derwin has worked in their Deburring department, and has cross trained in CNC Mills, Manual Mills, and Conventional Machining. He now works in the Mixed Manifold department assembling air filtration systems for airplanes. Derwin said, "The people at Provail are great! If I have any questions at all everyone is happy to help."

"I learned so much at Orion that I use every day now, like proper procedures, the right tool to use, and how to correctly do the paperwork," Derwin related, "One of the most important things I learned at Orion is to show up every day on time. Attendance is very important, and now I make sure that I show up early. I really appreciate the mentors, and all the people at Orion, for helping me get to where I am now!"

 Michael, Orion Program Participant.

Chance brought Michael to Orion. Michael loves to create artwork and spend time outside with his dog, weather permitting. He has worked as a tattoo artist, and thought that working in a mainstream profession was beyond his reach.

Michael was referred to Orion by the Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Michael came for an individual tour of Orion's Mukilteo location and decided to enroll in our paid manufacturing training program.

Michael learns best through repetition. As he progresses, he begins to get a better feel for the process, and his confidence grows.

"Orion has given me a sense of optimism, and has interrupted what I had assumed was the trajectory of my life," Michael said. "My experience with Orion has provided me a different direction, allowing me to merge into society after spending time in the tattoo subculture."

Tim Daw, Michael's Employment Consultant said, "Michael is awesome, and has exceeded expectations with every task."

"The training at Orion changed my perspective,"  Michael explained. "I realized I have potential and capabilities I wasn't allowing myself to access. Orion has given the confidence I need, and has shown me how to access my full potential."

Michael has received training in Inventory, CNC, Mechanical Assembly, Deburring, and Bonding. If you would like to learn more about Michael, or if you would like to see his resume, please contact Tim Daw at 425-355-1253 x234 or email him at tim.daw@orionworks.org.

Meet a Mentor - Angel Torres III

Angel Torres III, Orion mentor (standing), explaining a production process to Kelly, a program participant.

Mentors are a key pillar of Orion's training programs. Mentors are more than manufacturers. They help guide participants onto a path that can lead them to a career.

Angel Torres III worked as a trainer for 18 months, and worked in several areas of Mukilteo's production floor. Even though his work experience helped to lay the groundwork for him to be a mentor, Orion's five week mentor training gave him the guidelines he needed to be successful. The combination of his mentor training and his previous experience let him prepare to mentor others in a professional manner, while allowing flexibility for him to apply his own style.

Angel uses his own personal experience to help find common ground when working with someone who has a barrier to employment. He knows the feeling of entering the workforce for the first time with little experience, and how hard it can be; but more importantly, he knows that it's possible to be successful.

When teaching someone a new process, Angel is adept at finding different paths to the same solution. Angel recognizes that everyone learns a little differently, and will continue to explain a process in different ways until he finds the right combination that unlocks the participant's understanding. Angel explained, "I have more patience than I knew, and that patience allows me to think outside the box, and be creative when I need to be to find a solution."

Orion can play a pivotal role in a participant's life, and Orion's mentors are on the front lines. Angel said, "I'm proud to be able to connect with people. I help participants realize their own potential, and it's great to see them build their confidence and self-worth."
