Rooster, Orion graduate.

Rooster

While dealing with complex personal issues involving a custody battle, Rooster was also looking to change his trade. Rooster discovered Orion through word of mouth. He decided to come for a tour to check out Orion's Manufacturing Training Program. He had some construction experience, and was familiar with operating power tools, so felt that he had the mechanical aptitude that is needed to be successful in the program.

Before starting the training program, Rooster worked with Tricia Cleavelin, a vocational counselor at Orion, to smooth out the issues in his personal life that were acting as barriers to employment. Once he began to get a handle on those issues he was able to start Orion's paid training program.

While in the Orion training program, Rooster spent time in Blanking Press, Chaku, and Finish Line areas, among others. Chris Pierce, Rooster's mentor in the Finish Line, noticed his improvements, and let him know that he was doing a good job. That vote of confidence helped Rooster realize that he was building good work habits. Rooster said, "I learned that there is no team of one in manufacturing. I learned to play my part well, and I learned the value of contributing to a team. I'm more comfortable working with others now because I know I'm adding to the whole."

After completing the training program, Rooster earned a position with RBK Manufacturing doing precision hand deburring. He has been cross-trained on the fork lift, RBK's new computer controlled saws, and other equipment. Rooster is thankful to be working full-time for a great company.

"Orion helped me feel prepared for the job I'm doing now," Rooster related. "Orion is a great place, with great people, and is great opportunity for anybody who needs help taking the next step."

Congratulations Rooster!

 Clarence, Orion Program Participant.

Clarence was looking for a job and learned about Orion's paid training program, while attending a support group meeting. Clarence came for a tour of Orion's Manufacturing Training Program, and he liked what he saw. He was coming to the end of a probation period for a DUI, and worked with his probation officer and Orion's Intake Counselor to coordinate when he could start the paid training program.

Clarence started training in the Hydraulic Build Unit but was having trouble learning the new position. Clarence's work station was in front of several people, and he felt self-conscious. He was struggling with feeling like he couldn't do the work, but he stuck with it through his first day. Clarence went home that evening and thought about how he was going to handle the situation. Clarence said, "Opportunities are far and few between, and when an opportunity comes you have to do your best to take advantage of it. I set my mind to put forth my best effort."

The next morning Clarence felt like he made a break through, and as he became more familiar with the work, he began to build a comfort zone. Clarence was able to build small successes by having the patience to adhere to a standard and see things through. Over time he developed a track record of success. Clarence explained, "I've always been a good worker, but I lost my confidence and became complacent with that. Orion helped me by giving me an opportunity to build my self-confidence, and through that, I earned my self-respect back."

Clarence is grateful for his experience at Orion. Clarence related, "I learned so much more at Orion than technical skills; I also learned communication skills, people skills, and how to have fun working as part of a team. The best decision I made was to have the patience to stick it out and take full advantage of all that Orion has to offer."

Clarence has received training in the Hydraulic Build Unit, Clamp Block, Shipping & Receiving, Packaging, and the Blanking Press. He is hoping to find employment working in Shipping & Receiving. Meet a Mentor - Jeri Lucas

By Josh Nelson

There are many important jobs at Orion: manufacturing, shipping & receiving, management, planning, job development, and the list goes on and on. But mentoring is job one at Orion. And Jeri Lucas is a mentor's mentor, having recently helped to train the first cohort of mentors at Orion's Mukilteo location.

Jeri is Orion's Clerical and Customer Service Instructor at the Auburn facility, and in just a few months, she will be celebrating eight years with the company. Over the course of those eight years, Jeri has dedicated herself to instructing, planning, and devoting herself to Orion's mission. And at the forefront of all her responsibilities is mentoring.

"Instructing is what I do. I teach and coach and provide soft skills training for the program participants here at Orion," Jeri said. "It's not like out there on the shop floor, where you're a mentor plus you have production goals. And that's a real advantage for me."

Jeri's devotion to her students and their betterment is something she takes pride in, but not in the way you might expect. "I'm proud of my students and what they accomplish. They may come up and thank me at the end of their program, but the truth is they did all the work. They made all the accomplishments."

Jeri said that seeing the resilience and commitment of those who wish to change their lives is the most gratifying part of being a mentor. "On a regular basis the people who come through Orion remind me what we [ourselves] are capable of. Sometimes we just need a little help and encouragement."

And that steady encouragement is right in line with being a mentor at Orion. Jeri recalled a program participant from years ago, this woman was just angry. With a dissatisfied look on her face every day, she would sign paperwork and write remarks like "done under duress." It was like she was always suspicious of an ulterior motive on Orion's part. "But we never pushed back. We gave this woman honest feedback, were supportive, and looked beyond her attitude. After about three weeks, she quit looking for the ulterior motives. She started to accept our help; she became engaged, and her expression changed." Jeri said that by the end of her time with the program, the woman had a complete attitudinal shift and worked the program to her advantage. "Nobody is that distrusting overnight...we had to earn our way in, and when her time with me ended, she went on to work with our job developers."

Although being a mentor, instruction, and training all fall within Jeri's purview, she has the entire T&E team behind her for support, just like every other mentor at Orion. "We're a cooperative and sort of collaborative group," she said. "I can come to the Training and Employment staff with a situation and they never tell me exactly what I need to do. Instead it's more like 'did you think of trying this...?' or 'have you tried addressing something this way...?' It's really a benefit for everyone who goes through the program because there is a full team behind them."

Mentoring is job one at Orion and the payoff for us is seeing our participants succeed, even if their struggle seems insurmountable. Jeri is one of many who are here to make that success become a reality.
