Mukilteo's Mentors

Orion Industries, Mukilteo, now has openings in their new Manufacturing Training Program! Program Participants will receive one-on-one support from Orion's trained mentors while receiving paid on-the-job assessment and training. Full-time or part-time options are available in the training program, and participants will rotate through several work centers gaining the experience that will help direct their vocational goals, and that employers are looking for.

The start of the training program in Mukilteo signals that the merger process between Orion and what was formerly Diversified Industrial Services is nearing completion, and a key for the program's future success is having trained mentors in place. Zandra Leitch, Director of Services - Mukilteo, explained, "In order to support the training program each department works together, allowing the entire team to participate in Orion's mission of helping those who have barriers to employment. The new cohort of mentors are excited about the opportunity, and want to be successful!"

In preparation for their new role the mentors in Mukilteo went through five weeks of training. Mentor training included working on sensitivity and communication skills, and combined role playing with examples of how to best work with an individual's barriers.

Denny Pritchard, an Orion Mentor, said, "I've learned that good communication is essential, not only between me and the participant, but also with the other mentors. Good communication will allow the participant to move from area to area while continuing to learn and grow as they gain specific job skills."

The cohort of new mentors were selected due to their work experience, and because of their participation in performing Community Based Assessments with clients. The mentors will provide one-on-one training in Mechanical Assembly, the Bond Shop, and Shipping & Receiving, with other areas to be added as the program grows. Program Participants will spend 4-6 weeks in each area, with 3-6 months targeted for completion of the program, dependent on their performance. After training, Orion provides job placement and job retention services.

Angel Torres III, an Orion Mentor, related, "Our mentor training gave us some good tools for our tool belt. Now it's time for us to support others, and give them the chance to learn new skills!"

Orion establishing the training program in Mukilteo is a positive step for the community in North King and Snohomish County. Zach Hornberger,  an Orion Mentor, said, "This is an opportunity for others to come and get training, but it is also an opportunity for us to have a positive impact on the community."

Jaye at work in Orion's Auburn Manufacturing Training Program.

Jaye  has construction experience and spent 30 years as a line cook. He was struggling with substance abuse however, and needed to humble himself and start over. He knew that it was essential for him to get away from his typical crowd in order to break his old habits. Jaye found his faith while at the Tacoma Rescue Mission and found Orion shortly after.

Orion has provided a stable learning environment for Jaye since he started the manufacturing training program at the beginning of July. He has gained experience in Shipping/Receiving, Mills, Saws, Clamp Block, Hydraulic Build Unit, and in Finishing. He was also the first program participant to receive forklift training. Jaye exclaimed, "The mentors at Orion are always watching and evaluating participants; I'm glad I came here to do my best!"

Orion offers paid training programs, and provided Jaye with a steady paycheck along with a stable schedule. He used this to build a new foundation for himself, and is taking steps to rebuild his life. He has established a checking account and has set his sights on getting his driver's license.  Jaye related, "It has been helpful to be around other people who are trying to accomplish the same things that I am. Orion helps people change their lives, and Orion helped me build productive habits and establish a routine. I'm getting my feet under me again, and now my goal is to make a difference in the community."
