Margaret, Orion Office Skills & Customer Service Training Program Graduate.

Margaret

Margaret graduated from Green River College in the summer of 2015 with an A.A.A. degree. She learned the Microsoft Office Programs, and took both beginner and advanced classes in Access, Excel, Word, Outlook and OneNote, and also learned QuickBooks. After graduating that program, which she took as an update to her B.S. degree, she found employment doing work that did not allow her to use the skills she had learned. When the company she was working with lost a national contract she was laid off on December 31, 2017. After this she knew that she would have to brush up her skills.

While taking a Strategies for Success class at a local WorkSource office, she attended a presentation about Orion's training programs, given by Kristina Pressley, Orion's Intake & Outreach Coordinator. Margaret was intrigued and came for a tour of Orion's Office Skills & Customer Service program, offered at our Auburn location, and decided to sign up for the training program.

Margaret had been working a flexible, independent schedule, and establishing a routine at Orion was helpful for her. As she progressed through the self-paced tutorials and worked one-on-one with Jeri Lucas, her instructor, she found that the experience she was gaining was the key to unlocking her confidence.

Margaret said, "I was happy to be in a working office environment. On the very first day, I knew that Orion's training program was the right thing for me to do. Once on the path, I knew what each next step was; the structure was valuable and helped me to open up. I trusted the process."

Orion has the ability to customize it's training programs, and tailor them according to the strengths and weaknesses of each person.

"The training program at Orion is unique for each person," Margaret explained. "They have a great team there to support you, and it really makes a difference. The kind words and encouragement I received when working with a mentor made the learning process feel like a positive collaboration. Orion made me feel prepared for the work that I was going to do!"

After completing the training program, Margaret took a short term position at Trillium, assisting them with updating their database and transitioning it from one software platform to another. Margaret is responsible for checking that data has ported over correctly and making manual corrections when necessary. The job is very detail oriented, but Margaret works well independently, and she enjoys seeing the progress that they are making day by day towards completing the massive project.

Once the project is complete Margaret plans to work with Orion's job developers once again to help her with her job search. She is confident in her abilities and is grateful that she will have additional experience that she can include on her resume.

Congratulations Margaret!

Tracy, Orion Office Skills & Customer Service Training Program Participant.

While working with the Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), Tracy recognized that she was lacking experience. She began looking for a place that could help her brush up on her office skills. Tracy's DVR counselor recommended the Office Skills and Customer Service Training Program at Orion. Tracy decided to come take a tour of the program, at Orion's Auburn location, to find out more and decided on the spot to sign up for the program, knowing that it was exactly what she was looking for.

Tracy explained, "I only have a short employment history with limited experience, so employers have viewed me as underqualified. I just haven't had the necessary time in my work history to be able to prove myself, but I know I can do this. I've worked hard here at Orion to gain the skills I need so that I can be part of a team."

Orion's Office Skills and Customer Service Training Program is self-paced and includes computer exercises and tutorials. While in training participants have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the instructor, and also participate in group discussions. Tracy learned PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook, and gained valuable customer service experience.

Jeri Lucas, Tracy's instructor said, "Tracy impressed me. From improving her computer skills, to building her confidence, Tracy was motivated, and it showed in everything she did. Tracy was reliable; she showed up on time and was ready to work; she listened, and she put in consistent effort. Tracy was a quick learner, and her daily work was accurate and complete."

Tracy agreed, and stated, "It was very helpful to have Jeri helping me when I needed it. She took the time to walk me through the exercises step-by-step until I was confident I had it down. Once I have learned something I'm locked in, and when I know I can do something, it adds to my confidence."

Orion's programs are flexible enough that they can employ different strategies to help people learn. Finding the right combination is one of the keys to helping participants succeed, and it is something that our instructors and mentors excel at.

Tracy said, "Orion's program is very well organized. They offer a supportive team and they gave me the tools I needed to be successful. I know that I'm capable of more than I was giving myself credit for. I have such a positive outlook now; Orion has helped me to build my confidence while I learned new skills, and I know that I can learn or do anything I put my mind to."

Meet a Mentor - Tanya Minerich

Tanya Minerich (standing) working with Tyler (sitting), a program participant in Orion's Manufacturing Training Program.
We look to mentors for so much: guidance, instruction, leadership, the list goes on and on. But one of the invaluable gifts mentors give us is their wisdom which allows us to grow. And that growth is what makes mentoring so critical for Tanya Minerich.

Tanya is an Orion Production Scheduler working at the Auburn facility in Admin. She has been with Orion for more than 16 years, starting back in 2002.

"It was different back then," she said. "We didn't have the clearly designated departments like we do now, you just sort of jumped in where you were needed. I was the 22nd employee at that time!"

That sort of longevity has served Tanya well as she has been able to draw on her years of experience in her role as a mentor in Orion's training program. Tanya has been a mentor since Day 1 at Orion.

"There's always that difficult moment in the beginning, when you first meet your new participant," said Tanya. "I'm trying to identify their learning style and then adapt myself to it. Sometimes that period is short, sometimes it's longer. The importance is recognizing that it takes as long as it takes."

"Everyone has 'light switch moments,' when you can see the lights come on," she said. "Those moments can be the most rewarding for me."

"I'll run into a former participant out in the community and there's usually a big smile and sometimes even a hug and they'll let me know what they have been up to and hopefully say 'I'm still placed where Orion put me,' and it just feels great all over."

As much as Tanya has to offer towards the growth and success of our program participants, she knows that it's not something she can do on her own.

"I go to the vocational counselors and say: This is how I'm approaching this. We'll brainstorm together for a few minutes and then come up with a new method. That collaboration is really key."

Tanya works to support both participants and other mentors throughout Orion. Tanya explained, "When a participant is moving to another training area I make sure to introduce them to their next cell, to help them make the transition as well as give them a chance to meet their new mentor."

Old and new mentors could learn a lot from Tanya and she has one final piece of advice for you.

"My biggest tip to any mentor is to recognize that we all learn at a different pace. You may have a quick learner one week and one who struggles the next. But stick with it. The rewards are incredible and both of you grow."
